Bab semarine

Located in the heart of the Medina, this monumental city gate stands as a testament to Morocco's rich architectural heritage. Constructed in 1276 under the Marinid Sultan Abu Yusuf Ya’qub, it was originally named Bab 'Oyun Sanhaja, translating to "Gate of the Water from Sanhaja," reflecting its significance as a vital water source for the city. Over time, the gate's name evolved to Bab Semmarine, or "Gate of the Ferriers," due to its association with blacksmiths who once operated in the vicinity. (tripadvisor.fr)

Architecturally, the gate features a distinctive bent entrance, a common defensive design in medieval Moroccan gates. This design was intended to slow down potential invaders by forcing them to navigate multiple turns. However, during the French colonial period in 1924, the gate underwent significant modifications to accommodate increased traffic flow, including the introduction of a double entrance with multiple archways. The outer facade of the gate is adorned with blind polylobed arches and the darj-wa-ktaf motif, a traditional Moroccan design resembling a stylized fleur-de-lys or palmette. Inside, the passage includes a side door leading to another passage that runs westward along the old city walls, historically providing direct access to the royal palace. Additionally, a large vaulted market hall, rebuilt in the 20th century in the style of the Marinid granaries, is situated on the other side of the gate. (en.wikipedia.org)

Today, this gate serves as a prominent landmark, symbolizing the fusion of Morocco's historical significance and architectural ingenuity. Its strategic location and intricate design continue to attract visitors and historians alike, offering a glimpse into the city's storied past.
