Mustafa Pasha Mosque
Perched above Skopje's Old Bazaar, the mosque was constructed in 1492 by Çoban Mustafa Pasha, a prominent Ottoman vizier during the reigns of Sultan Bayezid II and Sultan Selim I. The mosque's design is a prime example of early Ottoman architecture, featuring a square base topped with a 16.3-meter-diameter dome. This dome rests on pillars adorned with arabesque motifs, with original paintings from the time of construction on the left side and later additions on the right. (haemus.org.mk)
The mosque's entrance is marked by a white marble porch supported by four columns, connected by semicircular arches and covered by three smaller domes. Adjacent to the mosque is a hexagonal marble türbe (mausoleum) that houses the sarcophagus of Mustafa Pasha, who passed away in 1519. The türbe is also the resting place of Umi, one of his daughters. The mosque complex once included a caravanserai, a medrese (Islamic school), an imaret (communal soup kitchen), a mekteb (elementary school), and a türbe. Today, only the mosque, the türbe, and the stone sarcophagus of Umi remain. (haemus.org.mk)
In 1963, the mosque suffered significant damage due to an earthquake. A comprehensive five-year renovation, funded by the Turkish government, was completed in August 2011, restoring the mosque to its former glory. (en.wikipedia.org)
The mosque's elevated position offers a panoramic view of the Old Bazaar, and its rose garden adds to the serene ambiance of the site. Visitors can admire the intricate calligraphic inscriptions and the beautifully crafted wooden mahvil (gallery) that runs along the northwest wall. (haemus.org.mk)
Today, the mosque stands as a testament to Skopje's rich Ottoman heritage, attracting visitors and worshippers alike.
