Tutunsuz Mosque
Situated in the heart of Skopje's Old Bazaar, the mosque stands as a testament to the city's rich Ottoman heritage. Its construction in the 15th century reflects the architectural and cultural influences of the time.
The mosque's design is characterized by a basilica architectural form, featuring a four-ridged roof that aligns with the Early Constantinople style in Ottoman architecture. The interior is partitioned into three naves, supported by rows of three columns, creating a spacious and harmonious prayer hall. The ceiling boasts a flat wooden coffered design, adding to the aesthetic appeal of the space. Notably, the mihrab, minber, and mahvil were added in the 1910s, contributing to the mosque's historical evolution.
Adjacent to the mosque are two türbes (mausoleums): the Türbe of Ali Pasha of Dagestan and the Türbe of Bikiy Han. The former houses the tombs of Ali Pasha's wife and daughter, while the latter is the largest of its kind in North Macedonia, containing five uninscribed tombs. The surrounding area features a necropolis with several grave markers, underscoring the site's historical significance.
The mosque's location on a plateau near the clock tower offers a commanding view of the Old Bazaar, emphasizing its prominence in the city's landscape. Its resilience is evident, having remained largely undamaged through various fires and earthquakes that have affected Skopje over the centuries. This enduring presence highlights the mosque's cultural and historical importance to the local community.
In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize the Old Bazaar, including the restoration of several historical buildings. These initiatives aim to preserve the area's rich heritage and promote its economic and cultural development. The mosque continues to serve as a focal point for both worship and tourism, reflecting the enduring legacy of Skopje's Ottoman past.
