Fen Ditton War Memorial
The Fen Ditton War Memorial, a Grade II listed structure, stands at the junction of High Street and Church Street in Fen Ditton, Cambridgeshire. This obelisk, crafted from Portland stone, was unveiled on April 30, 1921, to honor the 22 local men who perished during the First World War. The names are inscribed on the plinth in order of rank and then alphabetically. (historicengland.org.uk)
The memorial was designed by Ivett and Reed Ltd, a notable firm of monumental masons. The unveiling ceremony was conducted by Lieutenant-Colonel F.J.M. Stratton, with the dedication performed by the Archdeacon of Ely. Following the Second World War, the names of five additional local men who lost their lives were added to the base of the plinth, ensuring that their sacrifices were also commemorated. Located near the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin and the King's Head public house, the memorial is a focal point for the community, especially during Remembrance Day services. In 2005, a grant of £350 was awarded by South Cambridgeshire District Council to Fen Ditton Parish Council for the cleaning and repair of the memorial, highlighting the community's commitment to preserving this important piece of local history.
