Saint Andrew’s Church Girton

St Andrew's Church, Girton

St Andrew's Church in Girton, Cambridgeshire, is a historic parish church with a rich heritage spanning over a millennium. Dedicated to Saint Andrew since at least 1240, the church's architecture reflects various historical periods, with parts of the west tower dating back to the 12th century, and significant rebuilding in the 15th and 16th centuries. (en.wikipedia.org)

The church is constructed from fieldstone, rubblestone, and dressed limestone, featuring a west tower, nave, north and south aisles, south porch, and chancel. The west tower, embattled and of three stages, is flanked by the westernmost bays of the north and south aisles. The nave is also embattled and has a clerestory of four cinquefoil lights to each side in four-centred heads. The south porch, with an embattled roof, has two storeys, with the parish room on the first floor added late in the 15th century. (historicengland.org.uk)

Inside, the church houses a 13th-century font, a late 16th-century south door with ovolo moulding, and a restored 15th-century chancel screen with closed lower panels and subcusped ogee arches. The church was restored in 1853, and the chancel was decorated around 1899. Through the bequest of Miss Coombe, the daughter of a former rector, the church was completely restored, and a new organ was installed in 1926-1927 at a cost of £2,000. (genuki.org.uk)

The churchyard is the final resting place for notable individuals, including botanist Agnes Arber and academic Ellen Wordsworth Darwin.
