Zion Chapel Sunday School
The Zion Chapel Sunday School, located on East Road in Cambridge, is a Grade II listed building with a rich history dating back to 1838. Originally constructed as a Baptist chapel, it now serves as a hall and stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural heritage of the area. (historicengland.org.uk)
Designed by William Peachey of York, the building is constructed from grey gault brick and features a low-pitched hipped slate roof. Its façade is distinguished by four shallow arcaded bays with semi-elliptical heads, each containing sash windows with glazing bars on both floors. Stringcourses separate the floors, and a panelled door was added in 1879, coinciding with the construction of the present chapel. Inside, the upper floor is supported by cast-iron fluted columns with foliated capitals, originally intended to carry galleries. (historicengland.org.uk)
The chapel was founded by Henry Battiscombe, a notable dissenting minister and Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge. His vision led to the establishment of the church on this site in October 1837, marking the beginning of a long-standing Baptist presence in the community. (zionbc.org.uk)
Over the years, the building has undergone several alterations. In 1879, the current chapel was built, and the original structure was repurposed as a hall. Despite these changes, the building retains its historical significance and architectural integrity, contributing to the character of the Petersfield area. (historicengland.org.uk)
Today, the Zion Chapel Sunday School continues to be an integral part of the community, hosting various events and activities that reflect its enduring legacy. Its presence on East Road not only serves as a reminder of Cambridge's rich religious history but also as a focal point for community engagement and cultural appreciation.
