St Mary the Virgin Church, High Easter

St Mary the Virgin Church in High Easter, Essex, is a Grade I listed Norman church with significant 14th and 15th-century additions. The building began shortly after the Norman Conquest around 1100, with the chancel and nave closely resembling today's structure. The walls are constructed of flint rubble, incorporating Roman tiles in the chancel walls and quoins, repurposed from an earlier, unknown building. (regc.org.uk)

In the mid-14th century, the church underwent substantial expansion. Plans included adding two side aisles, but only the north aisle was completed around 1400. The chancel arch was enlarged to accommodate this new layout, resulting in its current off-center position. (regc.org.uk)

Circa 1460, a prominent west tower was constructed, featuring flint chequerwork near its base—a distinctive feature in East Anglian churches. Following the tower's completion, the nave roof was removed, and a brick clerestory was added, enhancing natural light within the nave. A new flat-pitched roof was installed, showcasing magnificent oak tie-beams adorned with intricate carvings of animals and foliage. These beams honor Sir Geoffrey Gate, who funded the work. The south brick porch, added in the early 16th century, features a double-chamfered plinth, a stepped gable, and an embattled parapet. The outer archway has molded jambs and a four-centred arch under a square head with a molded label. (historicengland.org.uk)

Inside, the church houses a 14th-century font with an octagonal bowl, each face carved alternately with angels holding shields and symbols of the Evangelists. The stem is octagonal with shaped stops and a lead lining, bearing a scratched inscription and the date 1594. Fragments of 14th or 15th-century stained glass are present in the south window of the nave. (historicengland.org.uk)

The church is part of the Easters, Rodings, and Great Canfield Group, sharing a full-time Priest-in-Charge. Services include Morning Worship on the first Sunday at 11 a.m., Evening Prayer on the third Sunday at 4:30 p.m., and a Christingle service on Christmas Eve at 4:30 p.m. (achurchnearyou.com)

The church's rich history and architectural features make it a significant landmark in High Easter, reflecting the village's heritage and the community's enduring faith.
