About this place

Discover Hammer Tower 4 (Martello Tower 4)

Martello Tower No. 4, situated on Cliff Road in Folkestone, Kent, stands as a testament to the strategic military architecture of the early 19th century. Constructed in 1806, this tower is part of a series of 74 Martello towers built along the southeast coast of England, from East Sussex to Suffolk, to defend against the threat of Napoleonic invasions. The design of these towers was inspired by a fortified tower at Mortella Point in Corsica, which had successfully resisted British forces in 1793. (historicengland.org.uk)

The Martello towers were strategically placed to provide a continuous line of defense, with each tower positioned within sight of the next, allowing for coordinated defense strategies. They were typically built as compact, free-standing circular buildings on three levels, constructed of rendered brick. The towers were armed with a single large cannon mounted on the roof, designed to fire at enemy ships approaching the coastline. The towers also featured a dry moat and an outer glacis, providing additional protection against attacks. (historicengland.org.uk)

Martello Tower No. 4 is a brick-built, circular structure measuring approximately 13 meters in diameter and standing about 10 meters tall. The tower is set within a dry moat and features an outer glacis, characteristic of the Martello design. The roof retains most of its original features, including a central pedestal that once supported a gun pivot. During World War II, a small observation post was added to the roof, consisting of a series of brick walls standing to a height of around 1 meter. (heritagegateway.org.uk)

The tower is privately owned and is a Scheduled Monument, indicating its national importance. It is listed on the National Heritage List for England, reflecting its historical and architectural significance. (historicengland.org.uk)

Today, Martello Tower No. 4 stands as a significant historical landmark, offering insight into the coastal defense strategies of the early 19th century. Its preservation allows visitors and historians alike to appreciate the ingenuity and resilience of the structures designed to protect England's shores during a tumultuous period in its history.
