Mace St, Bethnal Green, London E2 0RB, United Kingdom

Cranbrook Community Food Garden

Established in 2009, this community garden was created by local residents who transformed a neglected playground into a vibrant space for growing fresh produce. The initiative aimed to foster community engagement and provide access to healthy food options. (justfact.co.uk)

The garden features 18 raised beds, a greenhouse, a mini food forest, compost bays, a pergola with a green roof, a frog pond, bird spa, and a bee mound. These elements support a diverse range of plants and wildlife, promoting biodiversity and environmental sustainability. (londongardenstrust.org)

Over the years, the garden has received multiple accolades, including seven Outstanding ratings in London in Bloom between 2016 and 2023. In 2024, it won the London in Bloom Environmental Challenge and was named Tower Hamlets in Bloom Best Garden for Wildlife in both 2022 and 2023. (londongardenstrust.org)

In 2023, the garden expanded its outreach by creating Berry Lane, a row of planters along the garden containing native fruit bushes accessible to passers-by. Visitors can also enjoy the Little Free Library and Stumpery, added in 2024, as well as Wormery Corner, where the garden team produces organic fertilizers from comfrey, banana peels, and wormeries. The compost system includes four open bays for garden waste and leaf mulch, and three hot bin composters where residents can drop off their food waste, which is not collected by the council. Thanks to this system, the garden has been self-sufficient in compost for the last four years. (londongardenstrust.org)

The garden operates on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00, offering plants, seeds, homemade preserves, and refreshments for sale. Special activities for the garden's 15th birthday year include decorating leaves for the wish tree, painting a community mural, and collecting a party bag filled with garden goodies. In 2025, the garden plans to launch 'Project Raindrop,' installing seven new water butts and tanks to reduce reliance on mains water. Additionally, a 'hugel' is planned—a raised bed made from logs, twigs, and leaves to mimic the actions of a forest floor. A wider range of herbs and medicinal plants will also be planted to attract a broader range of pollinators. (londongardenstrust.org)

The garden's community cookbook, launched in spring 2025, features quick and simple recipes for the food grown in the garden, from classic vegetables like rhubarb, tomatoes, and potatoes to more unusual fare such as cucamelons, shark's fin melon, and slipper gourd. Copies are available for sale during London Open Gardens events. (londongardenstrust.org)

Located within the iconic modernist Cranbrook Estate, designed by Skinner, Bailey, and Lubetkin and completed in the 1960s, the garden is home to Elizabeth Frink’s sculpture "The Blind Beggar and his Dog." (londongardenstrust.org)

The garden is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00. Wheelchair access is available to most of the garden, though some areas have uneven ground. Dogs on leads are welcome. (londongardenstrust.org)
