Kever (Grave) of Raphael Meldola חופת חתנים Chupas Chasanim

The final resting place of Raphael Meldola, a distinguished Sephardic rabbi and scholar, is situated in the Spanish and Portuguese (Sephardic) Cemetery at Golder's Green in London. Meldola, born in 1754 in Leghorn (Livorno), Italy, was a prominent figure in the British Jewish community during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He received a comprehensive education in both theological and secular subjects, demonstrating exceptional talent from a young age. At just fifteen, he was granted a position in the rabbinical college and later received his rabbinical ordination from the renowned Rabbi Chayim Yosef David Azulai, known as the Chida. In 1804, Meldola was appointed as the Haham (chief rabbi) of the Sephardic community in London, succeeding his father-in-law, Haham Isaac Nieto. His tenure was marked by scholarly contributions and active engagement with both Jewish and Christian communities. He maintained correspondence with prominent Christian clergymen and scholars, including the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Canon of Windsor, which led to his audience with King George III. Meldola authored several significant works, including "Chuppat Chatanim" (1797), which addresses the laws of marital life, and "Derekh Emunah" (The Way of Faith), published posthumously by his son. His scholarship attracted a circle of distinguished individuals, such as Benjamin Disraeli and Isaac D'Israeli. He was also known for his opposition to policies that led to tensions within the community, notably the rupture between the Mahamad (lay leaders) and the congregation. (halakhaoftheday.org)

Meldola married Stella Bolaffi (Abulafia), with whom he had four sons and four daughters. Their daughter, Rica Meldola, married David Aaron de Sola, the senior minister and preacher of Bevis Marks Synagogue in London. Their descendants continued to contribute to Jewish scholarship and community life. (jewishencyclopedia.com)

After his death on June 1, 1828, Raphael Meldola was interred in the Spanish and Portuguese Cemetery at Golder's Green. His legacy endures through his writings and the impact he had on the Jewish community in Britain.
