Bethnal Green Gardens

Bethnal Green Gardens, located in the heart of Bethnal Green, London, is a historic public park that has undergone significant transformations over the centuries. Established in 1690, the land was originally enclosed to prevent new constructions, as outlined in the Poor's Land Trust Deed. This deed referred to three enclosed areas east of the 'King's Highway' (now Cambridge Heath Road) and a small unenclosed piece to the west. (parksandgardens.org)

In 1822, following an appeal by His Majesty's Commissioners for Building New Churches, the trustees sold half an acre of land in the southwest corner of the northern enclosure. This land became the site for the Church of St John-on-Bethnal Green, designed by the renowned architect Sir John Soane and consecrated in 1828. The church remains a significant landmark in the area. The park's history took a somber turn during World War II. On March 3, 1943, a tragic disaster occurred when 173 men, women, and children lost their lives while descending the steps to the Bethnal Green Underground air raid shelter. This event remains the worst civilian disaster of the Second World War not caused by enemy action. A memorial was unveiled in December 2017 to commemorate the victims, located next to the stairway where the disaster occurred. (warmemorialsonline.org.uk)

Adjacent to the park is the Bethnal Green Library, a public library that opened on October 13, 1922. The library's site has a rich history; the first known building was constructed in 1570 and later became Wright's Madhouse, a private lunatic asylum, which closed in 1920. The library continues to serve the community, offering a range of services and resources. (en.wikipedia.org)

In 2015, the Friends of Meath Gardens group was established to revitalize the nearby Meath Gardens, a 4.1642-hectare park that was formerly the Victoria Park Cemetery. The group has been instrumental in planting hundreds of shrubs, bulbs, and native trees, earning the park a Green Flag Award in 2016. Their efforts have transformed the area into a vibrant space for families, schools, and youth groups. (friendsofmeathgardens.org)

Today, Bethnal Green Gardens stands as a testament to the area's rich history and resilience. It continues to serve as a communal space, offering recreational facilities and a peaceful environment amidst the bustling city.
