St Benet's Chaplaincy QMUL

Located on the Mile End campus of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), St Benet's Chaplaincy serves as a welcoming space for students and staff of all faiths and none. The chaplaincy is open Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm during term time, offering a peaceful environment for prayer, reflection, and community engagement. (qmul.ac.uk)

The building itself is a distinctive example of 1960s architecture, designed by Edward Playne and constructed between 1961 and 1962. Its unique domed structure and minimalist design make it a notable landmark in the East End of London. In 2014, the chapel was recognized as a Grade II listed building by English Heritage, highlighting its architectural and historical significance. (qmul.ac.uk)

Inside, the chapel features a remarkable mural titled "The Apocalypse of St John," created by Polish-born artist Adam Kossowski in 1964. This sgraffito mural, executed using a technique that involves scraping away layers of plaster to reveal underlying colors, depicts scenes from the Book of Revelation. The mural is considered one of Kossowski's crowning achievements and adds to the chapel's unique character. (qmul.ac.uk)

The chaplaincy comprises three main areas:

  • The Chapel: A serene space for prayer and reflection, open to all members of the university community.
  • The Lounge: A comfortable area where students and staff can relax, socialize, and access free refreshments, including coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and snacks.
  • The Quiet Room: Formerly a library, this room offers desks for study or spaces for board games. It is also available for booking as a meeting room. (qmul.ac.uk)

The chaplaincy team is available to offer support, guidance, and a listening ear to anyone in need. Revd Ella Sharples serves as the full-time chaplain and can be contacted via email at e.sharples@qmul.ac.uk or by phone at 07740 547689. Father Irvin Morastil, the Catholic Chaplain, is available every Friday from 11 am to 6 pm, with Mass held from 5 pm to 6 pm. (qmul.ac.uk)

For those seeking bereavement support, the chaplaincy offers a safe space to explore feelings and emotions surrounding loss, as well as practical assistance. The team has extensive experience in conducting funerals and memorial services and is available to support students, staff, and their families during difficult times. (qmul.ac.uk)

St Benet's Chaplaincy is a valuable resource within the QMUL community, providing a sanctuary for spiritual growth, personal reflection, and communal support.
