Church of the Holy Name and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart

The Church of the Holy Name and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, located in Bow Common, East London, is a Roman Catholic church with a rich history and a vibrant community. Established in 1892 by Cardinal Manning, the parish began with Masses held at a temporary chapel on Devons Road. The current church building, designed by architect Frederick Arthur Walters, was consecrated on 30 June 1894. Unfortunately, during World War II, the church suffered significant damage due to bombings, leaving only its walls standing. The structure was restored in the 1950s, preserving its historical significance. (parish.rcdow.org.uk)

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Franciscans took over the pastoral care of the parish community. Today, the church serves as a center for both the local English-speaking community and the Vietnamese Catholic community in London. The Vietnamese Chaplaincy offers Masses and services in Vietnamese, fostering a sense of community and spiritual support for Vietnamese Catholics in the area. (parish.rcdow.org.uk)

The church is known for its Sunday Mass at 12:00 pm, which is highly appreciated by both the Vietnamese community and other worshippers. The service is described as a wonderful experience, providing a place of worship that touches both the heart and soul. (hampsteadvillagelondon.com)

The church is located at 117 Bow Common Lane, London E3 4AU. For more information or inquiries, you can contact the parish office at 020 7987 3477 or via email at bowcommon@rcdow.org.uk. (parish.rcdow.org.uk)
