Kipling Estate Community Garden & Orchard
Established in 2021 by the Kipling Estate Tenants and Residents Association (TRA), this community garden and orchard is situated atop the estate's garage block, offering residents a unique opportunity to engage in urban agriculture. (camelliawater.org)
The garden features 23 raised beds, 24 fruit trees, and 12 fruit bushes, providing a space for residents to cultivate their own produce. Additionally, there are two composting stations and plans to build a polytunnel, harvest rainfall from surrounding buildings, and expand food composting. (walworthcgn.co.uk)
The project was initiated with support from the Mayor’s Fund and Southwark Council’s Cleaner Greener Safer scheme. It also involved collaboration with researchers from University College London and Imperial College London to co-design a garden that meets residents’ needs while addressing environmental and water management issues. The garden serves as a communal space for residents to grow fruit and vegetables, fostering collaboration and extending expertise in food cultivation. It also contributes positively to the well-being and quality of life for all residents of Kipling Estate. (farmgarden.org.uk)
In 2022, the garden received 420 native edible hedgerows from the Woodland Trust to surround the plot, enhancing its biodiversity and sustainability. (walworthcgn.co.uk)
The garden is open to the public during variable hours, with pre-arranged visits, events, or open days. For more information or to get involved, residents can contact the Kipling Estate TRA. (farmgarden.org.uk)
