All Saints Churchyard

All Saints Churchyard, located in the heart of Poplar, East London, is a historic site that seamlessly blends rich heritage with tranquil green spaces. Established in 1823, the church was designed by architect Charles Hollis in the Greek Revival style, featuring a prominent portico with fluted Ionic columns and a square tower surmounted by a slender spire. In 1862, the churchyard ceased to be used for burials and was progressively transformed into a public garden. The Metropolitan Public Gardens Association (MPGA) played a pivotal role in this transformation. In 1893, landscape gardener Fanny Wilkinson redesigned the northern section of the churchyard, creating a Garden of Remembrance adorned with flowerbeds and chest tombs. This area is enclosed by mature trees and 19th-century railings, offering a serene environment for visitors. (londongardenstrust.org)

The churchyard is enclosed by early 19th-century railings on low parapet walls, with granite and Portland stone piers featuring anthemion crestings. The site is open daily from 8 am to dusk, with the church typically open between 12 and 2 pm. The nearest Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station is All Saints, providing convenient access for visitors. (londongardenstrust.org)

Adjacent to the churchyard, the All Saints DLR station occupies the site of the former North London Railway’s Poplar station, which operated from 1866 to 1945. Today, All Saints Churchyard serves as a peaceful retreat amidst the urban landscape, offering a glimpse into London's rich history and providing a space for reflection and leisure.
