Originally built to serve the impoverished residents of Victorian slums, the church was described as "the poorest church in the diocese of London." Over time, it has transformed into a vibrant place of worship and community engagement. Notably, furnishings from neighboring churches, such as St Saviour and St Columba, were relocated here, enriching its interior with significant liturgical objects. (hoxton.church)
The church's mission extends beyond spiritual services. It hosts a weekly soup kitchen every Saturday evening, providing meals to homeless and vulnerable individuals. Additionally, a community youth club, STAYG, operates every Friday during school terms, offering a safe space for young people aged 8-16. A Winter Night Shelter runs from January to April each year, in collaboration with Hackney Winter Night Shelter, and a weekly community drop-in café is available on Wednesdays, offering free food and beverages. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the church initiated a food bank, distributing essential items to those in need. By Christmas, they had provided 4,749 meals to 350 people across 114-130 households. This initiative has since evolved into a community development project addressing food poverty, social isolation, and loneliness. (hoxton.church)
