Corpus Christi R C Church
Established in 1932, the parish began with Masses celebrated in a café on New High Street, accommodating a congregation of 30 to 40 individuals. By 1935, the community had grown to approximately 150 members, prompting the formation of a Parish Committee to fundraise for a dedicated church building. The first Parish Hall was completed in 1936, providing a proper place for Sunday Masses and weekday activities. The church's foundation stone was laid on October 1, 1936, and the first stage of the church was opened on February 18, 1937. (corpuschristiheadington.co.uk)
Architecturally, the church was constructed in two phases: the eastern half in 1936-1937 and the western half in 1953. The building features a longitudinal aisleless nave with a narrower chancel, complemented by a short west tower flanked by transepts. Notable interior elements include a tunnel-vaulted seven-bay nave and Stations of the Cross by Faith Tolkien, which are circular reliefs in bronze. (taking-stock.org.uk)
The parish has a rich history of community involvement and outreach. In 1962, a large stone tithe barn in Crown Road, Wheatley, was converted into a chapel of ease named Our Lady of Lourdes, serving as a place of worship for the Wheatley congregation. The church's location in Headington, a suburb of Oxford, places it near significant landmarks, including the former residences of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien, known for his contributions to literature, served as a reader at Corpus Christi during his time in Headington. (corpuschristiheadington.co.uk)
Today, Corpus Christi R C Church continues to serve as a vibrant center for worship and community engagement, reflecting the enduring spirit and dedication of its parishioners.
