All Saints' Headington
Lime Walk, Headington, Oxford OX3 7AL, United Kingdom
All Saints' Church in Headington, Oxford, is a notable example of early 20th-century ecclesiastical architecture, reflecting the community's growth and the philanthropic spirit of the era. Consecrated in 1910, the church was designed by the architectural firm of Arthur Blomfield & Son, renowned for their contributions to Gothic Revival architecture. (headington.org.uk)
The church's construction was a collaborative effort between the Morrell family and the residents of New Headington. Mrs. Morrell of Headington Hill Hall pledged £1,000 towards the building of a proper church, provided that the villagers raised the same amount, which they did, and the total cost for the building of the nave was £3,300. (headington.org.uk) This partnership underscores the community's dedication to establishing a place of worship that would serve their growing congregation.
Architecturally, the church is distinguished by its lancet windows and an impressive interior featuring short piers and broad arches. The nave, initially constructed, was expanded with the addition of a chancel in 1937, designed by N.W. Harrison. This extension increased the church's seating capacity from 400 to 600, accommodating the expanding congregation. (headington.org.uk)
The interior of All Saints' Church is adorned with rich painted decorations and contemporary furnishings, many designed by Bodley. The walls and roofs are stenciled with bands of richly colored patterns, including fruit and floral motifs, IHS and IHC monograms, and texts. The choir ceiling features symbols of the evangelists, and a Christ in Majesty flanked by angels and kneeling figures of the Virgin and St. John over the western tower arch. The paintings were executed in stages by several artists, with the Christ in Majesty painted by W.H. Hughes in 1875 and repainted in 1904 by B.M. Leach. A painting of Jesus blessing the Children on the west wall is probably also by Hughes. (historicengland.org.uk)
The church also houses a notable war memorial, commemorating those who served in the First and Second World Wars. This memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the community's sacrifices and the church's role in preserving local history. (warmemorialsonline.org.uk)
Today, All Saints' Church continues to serve as a vibrant center for worship and community activities. Its rich history and architectural beauty make it a significant landmark in Headington, reflecting the area's heritage and the enduring spirit of its community.
