Rose Hill Methodist Church

Established in 1835, the Methodist Church in this area has a rich history deeply intertwined with the local community. The chapel was founded by Henry Leake, a gentleman who, upon moving to Iffley in 1833, joined a group of Methodists holding services in a cottage. Recognizing the need for a dedicated place of worship, Leake leased land on the London to Henley Road at Rose Hill and laid the foundation stone in June or July 1835. Notably, the chapel included a burial ground, an uncommon feature for village chapels at the time, due to objections from the local vicar of St Mary’s Church in Iffley regarding Methodist burials in the churchyard.
