Rose Hill Methodist Church
34 Rose Hill, Iffley, Oxford OX4 4HS, United Kingdom
Established in 1835, the Methodist Church in this area has a rich history deeply intertwined with the local community. The chapel was founded by Henry Leake, a gentleman who, upon moving to Iffley in 1833, joined a group of Methodists holding services in a cottage. Recognizing the need for a dedicated place of worship, Leake leased land on the London to Henley Road at Rose Hill and laid the foundation stone in June or July 1835. Notably, the chapel included a burial ground, an uncommon feature for village chapels at the time, due to objections from the local vicar of St Mary’s Church in Iffley regarding Methodist burials in the churchyard. The earliest recorded burials at this site date back to 1842. (oxfordpreservation.org.uk)
The church has been a cornerstone of the community, adapting to the evolving needs of its congregation. In 1965, the youth club organized a fundraising event at Cowley Centre, collecting £13.50 to support the construction of a hospital in the Ivory Coast, contributing to a total of £69.50 raised for the £90,000 project. The church's commitment to community service continues today, with a congregation of around 20 members and a membership of fewer than 50, ranging in age from 14 to 97. Led by the Revd Paul Carter, the church strives to serve the diverse community of Rose Hill, which encompasses both affluent areas and one of the poorest housing estates in the country. This demographic diversity presents a unique challenge for the church to reach out to the entire community. (oxfordmethodists.org.uk)
The church is situated on the main road towards Rose Hill, easily accessible from the city center via public transport or a scenic cycle along the River Thames through Iffley Village. Affectionately termed 'Church on the Hill,' it continues to be a place of worship and community engagement, embodying the enduring message of God's love for the world. (dailyinfo.co.uk)
In 2018, the church was recognized as a heritage asset by the Oxford City Council, highlighting its historical and cultural significance within the community. (oxford.gov.uk)
Today, the church remains a vital part of the Rose Hill community, offering a welcoming space for worship, fellowship, and outreach, and continuing its mission to serve and support the diverse population it has long been a part of.
