Oxey Mead Nature Reserve

Oxey Mead is a 66-acre nature reserve located near the villages of Wolvercote and Yarnton, approximately two miles north of Oxford, England. This area, along with the adjacent Pixey and Yarnton Meads, forms part of an ancient floodplain that has been preserved for its rich biodiversity and historical significance. (theoxfordsausage.com)

Historically, Oxey Mead was common land used by the inhabitants of Kidlington, Yarnton, and Begbroke for haymaking. From the 13th century, villagers were allocated strips of land through a lottery system involving cherry-wood balls, each bearing the name of a villager. This practice continued until 1968, reflecting the community's deep connection to the land. (theoxfordsausage.com)

The reserve is characterized by its traditional hay meadows, which have never been ploughed and are managed solely for their hay crop. This management practice maintains the unique habitat, preventing the soil from becoming too fertile and allowing a diverse range of wildflowers and grasses to thrive. (theoxfordsausage.com)

In spring and summer, Oxey Mead transforms into a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers. Notable species include great burnet, fairy flax, and devil's-bit scabious. These plants attract a variety of butterflies, such as orange-tip, meadow brown, and ringlet, as well as day-flying chimney sweeper moths. The meadows also support grasshoppers, spiders, and beetles, contributing to the area's rich biodiversity. (bbowt.org.uk)

Birdlife is abundant, with skylarks often seen hovering overhead. In the wetter winter months, waders like snipe and redshank may be observed. The reserve's management practices, including controlled mowing, help maintain the habitat's health and support these species. (bbowt.org.uk)

Oxey Mead, along with the larger Pixey and Yarnton Meads, is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This designation underscores the area's ecological importance and the successful conservation efforts that have preserved its unique habitats and species. (theoxfordsausage.com)

Visitors to Oxey Mead can access the reserve via the towpath from Duke’s Cut, which links the Oxford Canal with the Thames, or from the A40 road near Wolvercote. The area offers a peaceful retreat from urban life, providing opportunities for walking, wildlife observation, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Oxfordshire countryside. (theoxfordsausage.com)
