Walter J. Wetzel Triangle
Walter J. Wetzel Triangle is a small public park located in the Howard Beach neighborhood of Queens, New York City. This .223-acre green space is bordered by Cohancy Street, 156th Avenue, 99th Street, and 157th Avenue. The park is dedicated to Walter 'Jo' Wetzel, a local resident who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War.
Born on September 16, 1944, in Howard Beach, Walter Wetzel was an avid athlete during his youth. He attended Our Lady of Grace Grammar School, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. His athletic talents continued to shine at St. John's Preparatory School and Far Rockaway High School, where he played varsity basketball. After high school, Wetzel briefly worked with the city's Parks Department before being drafted into the U.S. Army in October 1965. He completed his training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, before being deployed to Vietnam. On May 8, 1966, he began his tour in Vietnam and was killed in action 21 days later during the Battle of LZ 10 Alpha. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for Valor for his actions during the battle. Walter Wetzel is buried in Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. (virtualwall.org)
The park was established in his honor by Local Law 17 of 1977. It features small hedges, trees, and a memorial flagpole that honors Wetzel and other local veterans. The triangular intersection, which was too small for development, was designated as a public plaza, providing a serene space for reflection and remembrance. (en.wikipedia.org)
The community holds the park in high regard, with local residents continuing the tradition of raising the flag at the memorial every Memorial Day, a practice that began with Wetzel's family. This act of remembrance underscores the deep respect and gratitude the community has for Wetzel's sacrifice and the sacrifices of all veterans. (virtualwall.org)
Walter J. Wetzel Triangle serves as a poignant reminder of the personal stories behind the names on memorials and the enduring impact of individual sacrifices on the community. It stands as a testament to the values of courage, service, and remembrance that are cherished by the residents of Howard Beach and beyond.
