Queens Federation of Churches

Established in 1931 during the Great Depression, the Queens Federation of Churches (QFC) is an ecumenical organization dedicated to serving the diverse Christian communities of Queens, New York. Over the decades, it has grown to encompass over 700 Christian congregations, representing a wide array of denominations, including Adventist, Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, and many others. The Federation's mission centers on fostering unity among these congregations and addressing societal issues through the teachings of Jesus Christ. Governed by a voluntary Board of Directors, each serving a three-year term, QFC operates under the guidance of an executive director. Since 1978, Pastor N.J. Heureux Jr. has held this position, emphasizing the church's role in the social order and advocating for religious liberty. (queenschurches.org)

In its early years, QFC focused on youth ministry, organizing conferences and establishing the Protestant Committee on Scouting to emphasize the spiritual aspects of the Boy Scout program. With support from the New York City Youth Board in the 1950s and 1960s, the Federation employed youth workers and opened centers in nine churches, serving nearly 1,000 young people weekly through various activities and programs. Beyond its youth initiatives, QFC has been a staunch advocate for religious liberty, participating in numerous amicus curiae briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court and other courts to support the free practice of religion. The Federation has also been instrumental in reorganizing the Council of Churches of the City of New York and in establishing the Commission of Religious Leaders in New York City, which includes leaders from various faiths working together on common concerns. In 2002, QFC launched its online presence with the website www.QueensChurches.org, providing resources such as a comprehensive directory of congregations, news updates, and information on programs and events. The site also hosts "The Nexus of Queens," a publication delivering news to church leaders and the broader community. (queenschurches.org)

Through its multifaceted approach, the Queens Federation of Churches continues to play a pivotal role in uniting and serving the Christian communities of Queens, addressing both spiritual and social needs in the borough.
