King Fahd Extension

The King Fahd Extension is a significant addition to the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, designed to accommodate the increasing number of Muslim pilgrims visiting the holy city. This expansion, completed in 1993, added over 60,000 square meters of prayer space on the enlarged roof and an additional 86,000 square meters in the surrounding plaza, effectively increasing the mosque's capacity to over a million worshippers. The extension is characterized by its distinctive architectural features, including three prominent brown domes on the rooftop and three main entrances, collectively known as the King Fahd Gate. The area also boasts six minarets, two of which were constructed during the expansion in 1991. (theharamainarchives.wordpress.com)

In 2008, work began to further increase the capacity of worshippers in the Grand Mosque, planned by the late King Abdullah ibn Abdul-Aziz. The northern and southern sides of the mosque were demolished during 2013, leaving the western and part of the eastern structure, which includes Mount Safa and Marwa. The King Fahd Extension remains a vital part of the Grand Mosque, serving as a testament to Saudi Arabia's commitment to facilitating the spiritual needs of millions of Muslims worldwide.
