Trumpington Hall
Situated in the village of Trumpington, just south of Cambridge, this historic estate has been the residence of the Pemberton family since 1675. The current structure, built between 1715 and 1730, replaced an earlier Tudor mansion and showcases a blend of early 18th-century architecture with subsequent additions. (british-history.ac.uk)
The hall is a three-story red brick building with a distinctive H-shaped plan, featuring a seven-bay, two-storey east front with segment-headed windows and two projecting two-bay wings. Notable architectural elements include a balustraded staircase and fireplaces with early 18th-century panelling. (british-history.ac.uk)
The estate spans approximately 3,000 acres and includes a 28-acre solar farm. The grounds are adorned with formal rose beds, three canalized fish ponds, and a kitchen garden. A long avenue leads to the hall, flanked by a lodge and extensive parkland established in the 1820s. The drive culminates in a large segmental-ended forecourt, with wrought-iron gates flanked by tall brick piers supporting urns. (parksandgardens.org)
The Pemberton family's influence extends beyond the estate's architecture. In 2016, they became the first aristocratic family in Britain to formalize inheritance rights for same-sex partners, ensuring equal rights for widowed same-sex spouses. (thedicamillo.com)
While the hall remains a private residence and is not open to the public, its historical significance and architectural beauty continue to be a point of interest for those exploring the rich heritage of the Cambridge area.
