The garden's origins trace back nearly 300 years, as evidenced on John Rocque's 1746 map of London, where it appears as part of Mile End Green. This area, known as Mile End Waste, was a significant expanse of common land that straddled Mile End Road. In the early 19th century, following the construction of enclosed docks along the River Thames, the East End underwent rapid housing development. In 1872, local residents in Mile End Old Town campaigned to preserve the last remaining strip of Mile End Green from encroaching development. Their efforts led to the designation of four public gardens by the Metropolitan Board of Works, now collectively known as this garden. The garden is part of the Stepney Green Conservation Area, designated in January 1973 and extended in October 2008.
