Established in 1903, the Congregation of Jacob Synagogue, also known as Kehillas Ya'akov, is a historic Orthodox Ashkenazi synagogue located in London's East End. In 1921, the synagogue relocated to its current address at 351-353 Commercial Road, Stepney, London E1 2PS. The building was redesigned by Lewis Solomon & Son, honorary architects to the Federation of Synagogues, to accommodate the growing congregation. (jewishgen.org)
The synagogue is renowned for its unique East European folk-art style, reflecting the traditions of the founding community. Inside, visitors can admire a beautiful skylight above the Aron Kodesh (holy ark) and a painting by Dr. Philip Steinberg depicting Jewish symbols such as the menorah, shofar, and the four species of Sukkot. Over the years, the congregation has remained active, offering regular services on Friday nights and Saturday mornings, as well as during Jewish festivals. Despite the decline of the Jewish population in the East End, the synagogue continues to serve a dedicated community. In 2002, an English Heritage report described Kehillas Ya'akov as "a remarkable survival... and is all the more exceptional for continuing in use as a synagogue." (patrickcomerford.com)
The synagogue is affiliated with three burial societies: Federation, Adath, and Chesed Ve'emeth. It is owned and managed by members of the community, reflecting its independent spirit. (jewisheurope.org)
Visitors to the synagogue often praise its warm and welcoming atmosphere. One reviewer noted, "A very friendly and helpful community. A splendid kiddush provided at the end of each service." (yell.com)
The Congregation of Jacob Synagogue stands as a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of London's Jewish community, preserving traditions and providing a place of worship and community for all who enter its doors.
