FOOTBRIDGE OVER RIVER CHERWELL AT PARSONS PLEASURE PUNT ROLLERS, S Parks Rd, Headington, Oxford OX1 3JA, United Kingdom
Footbridge over River Cherwell at Parson's Pleasure Punt Rollers
The footbridge spanning the River Cherwell at Parson's Pleasure Punt Rollers in Oxford is a notable example of mid-20th-century engineering and design. Constructed in 1949 by R. Travers Morgan and Partners, this bridge was initially part of the Marston cycle track, which was established in 1991 to provide a 24-hour cycle route through the University Parks. The bridge is recognized as a Grade II listed building, highlighting its architectural and historical significance. It features two post-tensioned portal frames with a clear span of 45 feet, rigidly fixed to bases, and a deck of prestressed precast planks, later replaced by in situ concrete. This design is notable for being the first statically indeterminate prestressed concrete bridge in Britain and may be the first prestressed fixed arch in the world. (historicengland.org.uk)
Parson's Pleasure itself has a rich history. Dating back to the early 1600s, it was originally known as Patten's Pleasure, likely named after William Patten, the founder of Magdalen College. In the 19th century, it was referred to as Loggerhead, a name associated with Parliamentary encampments during the English Civil War. By the late 19th century, Parson's Pleasure became a popular bathing spot for unmarried Anglican clerics, offering a secluded area for relaxation and recreation. (theoxfordsausage.com)
The area underwent significant changes in the mid-20th century. In 1991, the Marston cycle track was established, incorporating the bridge and providing a continuous route through the University Parks. This development led to the closure of the Parson's Pleasure bathing area, marking the end of its long-standing tradition. (headington.org.uk)
Today, the footbridge stands as a testament to innovative engineering and the evolving history of Oxford's recreational spaces. Its unique design and historical context make it a significant landmark in the city.
