The King's Mill

King's Mill Ln, Headington, Oxford OX3 0EG, United Kingdom

The King's Mill

Situated along the River Cherwell in Oxford, this historic structure has roots tracing back to the Domesday Book, indicating its presence since at least the 11th century. The current building, constructed in the late 18th century, is a Grade II listed property, reflecting its architectural and historical significance. (historicengland.org.uk)

The mill is built from rubble stone with dressed quoins, featuring two storeys and an attic. Its design includes three-light wooden mullioned casements and a slate roof. Notably, sluices remain visible in the former mill race, a testament to its milling heritage. (historicengland.org.uk)

Adjacent to the mill is Mesopotamia, a narrow island in the River Cherwell. This area, now part of the University Parks, was purchased by the University of Oxford between 1860 and 1865. A footpath, known as Mesopotamia Walk, runs along the island from Parson's Pleasure to the mill, providing a pedestrian link between the city centre and Marston Road. The name "Mesopotamia," derived from the Greek for "between rivers," aptly describes its location between two branches of the Cherwell. (en.wikipedia.org)

The mill ceased milling operations in 1825 and has since been converted into a private residence. Despite this transformation, it retains its historical charm and continues to be a notable feature along the River Cherwell. (en.wikipedia.org)

The surrounding area, including King's Mill Lane, offers picturesque views of the river and the mill, making it a pleasant spot for walks and exploration. The presence of the mill and the adjacent Mesopotamia island adds to the rich tapestry of Oxford's history, blending natural beauty with architectural heritage.
