In January 1994, the park was renamed in honor of Police Officer Nicholas R. DeMutiis, who was tragically killed while attempting to block a fleeing suspect. On January 25, 1994, Officer DeMutiis, an 11-year veteran of the New York City Police Department, was off-duty and en route to his scheduled shift at the 106th Precinct. He observed a high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle and positioned his car to block the suspect's path. The suspect, driving at 70 mph, rammed Officer DeMutiis's vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries.
